Everything you need to know about Huawei’s Leica cameras
Huawei company has been presented by its smartphones equipped with Leica cameras. Many of us get stunning photos, enjoy amazing videos, recall special moments of our lives through this camera. However, there are some interesting facts about Leica cameras which you need to know.
The result of Huawei-Leica first cooperation was Huawei P9 smartphone with its dual camera. Since then, Leica cameras have been used in Huawei Mate 9, Mate 10 and Huawei P10 smartphones.
How did this cooperation happen and why Leica?
Mr. Li, who has been working at Huawei for 21 years and who has been a part of Huawei Consumer Business Group in the previous 6 years, said, ''Photography is a unique tool to keep each second of our fast-changing lives in our memories. These seconds build unforgettable memories, which could be simply forgotten due to lack of photos. In the meantime, high-quality photos make us relive the memories in a new way and try to recall the moments we desire”.
Leica is a German company established in 1914, which produces optical lenses and cameras and is well known by its portraits and street photography. Moreover, Leica is popular in film industry, since lots of movies have been made through Leica optical lenses.
Thus, the purpose was to combine high-quality camera and smartphone in one device. Huawei made it technically possible and named it mutual product. As a result the consumers were provided with an exclusive opportunity: smartphone+ HD camera.
red, green, blue (RGB) + monochrome
Huawei presented its red, green, blue colour sensor along with monochrome sensor –а real monochrome sensor, instead of filtered black and white implemented in most phones. Nowadays lots of phones have dual cameras, but this particular feature ensures the quality.
LEICA photography
The first step towards the idea implementation was the design of small lens on the body of the phone. Due to Leica’s perceptiveness, Huawei's engineering team was able to upgrade the MTF, which allowed to configure light and shadow. This is particularly important in making black and white photos.
Interestingly, when Huawei engineers brought the phone's sample to Leica's office, they were pleasantly surprised to see that their cameras were being tested with the same testing methods and equipment in Leica laboratories. However, the preliminary testing showed that some of the qualities did not correspond to Leica’s high standards and the sample was sent back until each photo got the confirmation from Leica.
LEICA’s stringent quality criterias
With Huawei’s each leading model Leica becomes more demanding in its quality criterias. The engineers of Huawei make a weekly travel from Shanhai (this is where Mate and P class smartphones were produced) to Leica and back in order to get the confirmation for the optical design and picture quality. This is made to ensure that you have a smartphone corresponding to Leica's stringent criterias.
Huawei, Leica and Huawei production team do their best to match the dual lenses correctly. We should consider that we deal with dual cameras and the proportionality is highly important.
Now you can be proud not only of your Huawei smartphone, but also of Leica camera, which meets the highest standards.
